Loial receives a massive bouquet from the women of the Stone for saving children during the attack. He is distressed when Faile reminds him of an oath to take her to the Two Rivers, forcing him to agree to bring her along despite Perrin's objection.

Chapter 18 - Into the Ways

Loial urges the group to hurry, rides a large horse, and leads them to the site of a vanished Ogier grove where the Waygate is hidden. He mourns the loss of the trees, removes the trefoil leaf from the gate, and watches Perrin enter first.

Chapter 27 - Within the Ways

Loial rides a tall horse through the Ways, carrying the packhorses' lead lines. He breaks a lantern during the fight with Trollocs and uses it as a weapon. Upon reaching the Manetheren Waygate, he dismounts to unlock it and later replaces the trefoil leaves to lock the gate from the outside, preventing the Machin Shin from following them out.

Loial sits in the inn drinking tea, expressing sorrow over Perrin's loss and agreeing to continue traveling with the group. He wears a cloak and hood to conceal his appearance while traveling through the village and woods.

Loial sits with the group in the sickhouse and explains to Verin that he locked the Waygate from the outside when they entered the Mountains of Mist, ensuring no one could use it until opened from this side.

Loial is initially denied permission to travel due to his size but is tasked by Perrin to secretly monitor Alanna before remaining behind.

Chapter 53 - The Price of a Departure

Loial arrives at Emond's Field carrying the wounded Gaul, exhausted from fleeing Trollocs and a Nightrunner for days. He confirms that the Waygate in the Mountains of Mist has been locked from the outside, requiring an Ogier Elder or an Aes Sedai to open it, and reports to Perrin the existence of several thousand Trollocs and fifty Myrddraal in the area. He later sits scribbling notes about his journey and gives Faile a book to carry to Caemlyn.
