Chapter 3 - Reflection
Summary
Perrin and Faile walk through the dim corridors of the Stone of Tear, observing the heightened fear and tension among servants and Defenders following Rand’s earlier ordeal. They encounter High Lord Torean and his guards, whose overt hostility and fear reveal the precarious political atmosphere, before Perrin presses on to find Rand. He discovers the Lord Dragon in a shattered room, bleeding and exhausted after battling malicious reflections that had possessed the mirrors. Moiraine arrives to Heal Rand, confirming that the attack was likely caused by a ‘bubble’ of the Dark One’s influence escaping as the seals weaken, rather than a direct Forsaken intrusion. As Rand resolves to face the Shadow without fleeing, Moiraine and Lan depart, leaving Perrin to ensure Faile’s departure from the Stone while the Maidens of the Spear remain to care for their leader.
Characters
- Perrin / Perrin Aybara — Perrin walks through the Stone of Tear with Faile, his eyes glowing gold in the dark, and confronts the rising fear among the locals. He storms past the Maidens of the Spear to find Rand injured in his chambers, applies pressure to a wound, and listens to Rand’s account of the mirror attack. After Moiraine heals Rand, Perrin departs the room, noting the shift in the Tairen lords' attitude and ensuring Faile decides to leave the Stone.
- Faile — Faile accompanies Perrin through the corridors, interpreting the behavior of guards and servants. She rebukes Perrin for his rudeness toward High Lord Torean but eventually decides to return to her own quarters, choosing not to meet Rand after learning of his condition.
- Torean (High Lord Torean) — High Lord Torean stands with his guards in a shadowed corridor, watching Rand’s anteroom. He displays fear masked by politeness toward Perrin, leering at Faile, and later intercepts Berelain to offer protection, though she rejects him sharply before vanishing.
- chiad (Chiad) — A blonde Maiden of the Spear who holds a spear to Perrin’s throat at Bain’s command. She later enters with Bain to bring water for Rand, standing by as Moiraine speaks privately with the Maidens.
- Rand al'Thor (Rand, Lord Dragon) — Rand sits injured in his shattered chambers, bleeding and holding Callandor. He explains the mirror attack to Perrin and Moiraine, refusing to run from his destiny. Moiraine heals his physical wounds, but he remains tense, vowing to find the source of the attack and declaring he will not be chased again.
