Characters

• Perrin / Perrin Aybara — Perrin wakes from fitful dreams of hanging and Whitecloaks, then visits Loial to request passage through the Ways to the Two Rivers to stop the Children of the Light. He refuses Faile's demand to come with him, insisting she tricked Loial, and agrees to trail them in secret. He accepts Gaul's offer of Aiel protection against the threats in the Two Rivers.
• Loial — Loial greets Perrin, revealing he is writing a book about the Dragon Reborn and showing the flowers given to him by the women of the Stone for saving children during the Trolloc attack. He is pressured by Faile into fulfilling an oath to take her anywhere she wishes, resulting in him reluctantly agreeing to bring her to the Two Rivers despite Perrin's anger.
• Gaul (Gaul, the Aiel) — Gaul approaches Perrin in the corridor, informing him that Rand al'Thor knows of his departure and that many Aiel wish to return to the Three-fold Land. He offers to accompany Perrin to the Two Rivers to protect him from the Whitecloaks, a offer Perrin accepts.
• Nynaeve al'Meara (Nynaeve) — Nynaeve confronts Lan about his deception regarding her mission to Tanchico, producing a letter from Amyrlin Siuan to assert her authority. When Lan moves to stop them, she allows him to kiss her passionately, declaring she wants him to be hers completely rather than letting him remember a broken oath to Moiraine. Elayne, observing the interaction, resolves to ensure Rand cannot easily escape her influence and that he will find it difficult to worm his way back into her good graces, internalizing the lesson that men need a firm hand.
