Chapter 51 - A Testing

Summary

Min Farshaw examines Callandor and receives a viewing of the sa'angreal being gripped by an onyx hand before Rand secures it. He dismisses Cadsuane Sedai's objections, orders Narishma to open a gateway, and dispatches Naeff disguised to investigate the Black Tower while delivering a message to Logain and loyalists that they are men rather than weapons. Rand confronts Cadsuane about his age, revealing he is nearly four and a half centuries old and asserting his unified identity as both Lews Therin and himself. The group rides to Far Madding where Borderlander monarchs Ethenielle, Paitar Nachiman, Easar Togita, and Tenobia intercept them. Each monarch strikes Rand as part of an ancient prophecy test, which he endures until revealing Callandor proves his identity. Paitar recites the prophecy demanding Rand answer how Tellindal Tirraso died, a question Rand answers correctly using memories from the Age of Legends. The monarchs sit with Rand in a tent where he explains the prophecy was a declaration rather than advice, warns that killing him would doom the world, and offers to teach their Aes Sedai Traveling in exchange for oaths of loyalty. He gives them an ultimatum to swear allegiance or remain behind as he prepares to march to Shayol Ghul, leaving Cadsuane to observe his growing political influence over another Borderlander army.
