Characters

• Sahra — Sahra, a novice, escorts Min to the Amyrlin's study. She is awestruck by Gawyn's presence and later presents Min to Keeper Leane, showing signs of admiration for the young lord.
• Elaida (Red sister, Elaida Sedai) — Elaida watches Min enter the Amyrlin's study with suspicion, confirming her belief that the Amyrlin is hiding Elayne's whereabouts. She reflects on her Foretellings regarding the Royal line of Andor and the ta'veren, deciding that Siuan must be stopped to protect the Tower and Andor.
• Byar (Jaret Byar) — Jaret Byar secures the village of Taren Ferry for Bornhald's forces, intimidating the locals with talk of Darkfriends. He reports to Bornhald that the south is full of Darkfriends, preparing for the crossing.
• Suroth (High Lady) — Suroth stands on a terrace in Seanchan, monitoring the harbor and her control over the Forerunners. She interrogates the collared damane Pura about the Dragon Reborn, dismissing the sul'dam while fearing the Empress's reaction to her failure at Falme.
• Pura (damane, former Aes Sedai) — Pura lies face-down before Suroth, wearing an a'dam collar. She answers Suroth's questions about the White Tower's control of the Dragon Reborn, claiming ignorance and fear of punishment, while trying to maintain her truthfulness despite the pressure from her sul'dam.
• Taisa (sul'dam) — Taisa stands behind Pura, controlling the damane via the a'dam. She reacts with outrage when Pura disobeys slightly and is dismissed by Suroth (via Alwhin), showing shame at the breach of protocol.
• Alwhin (so'jhin, Voice of the Blood) — Alwhin, a sharp-faced so'jhin, serves Suroth and interprets her subtle gestures to Taisa. She watches Pura with contempt and advises Suroth on the necessity of keeping certain secrets from the Empress.
