Chapter 7 - Playing with Fire
Summary
In Rand's chambers, Egwene and Elayne attempt to teach him how to embrace the True Source, but struggle to overcome the fundamental differences between male and female channeling methods. Rand demonstrates his immense strength and control over saidin, inadvertently shielding them and causing chaos in the room, while explaining his reliance on the 'Flame and Void' technique. Frustrated by the inability to teach him conventional Aes Sedai methods and acknowledging the dangerous nature of his power, Egwene ultimately rejects the idea of marriage between them, clarifying that her feelings are platonic, before leaving to continue her investigations.
Characters
- Elayne (Daughter-Heir) — Elayne visits Rand in his chambers to support Egwene's teaching efforts, though she also fails to sense his channeling directly. She persists in urging him to cooperate with their training and listens as Egwene explains the limitations of their current approach.
- Gaul (Stone Dogs' leader) — Gaul, the leader of the Stone Dogs, stands guard outside Rand's anteroom and briefly speaks with Egwene and Elayne, informing them that Rand is in a foul mood and has already chased off High Lord Torean.
