Chapter 17 - The Abbé’s Cell
Abbé / Faria — aliases: the abbé
Faria reveals his hidden treasures and teaching materials to Dantès, guides him through an investigation that identifies Danglars and Villefort as conspirators, and explains his escape plan. He suffers a seizure that leaves him paralyzed, accepts Dantès’s vow of loyalty, and directs him to block the tunnel before the sentry discovers it.
Chapter 18 - The Treasure
Faria / Abbé — aliases: my friend, the old man, the abbé
Faria reveals his treasure map by demonstrating how invisible ink on a bookmark was discovered through fire. He recounts the conspiracy of Alexander VI and Cesare Borgia against Cardinal Spada and the subsequent concealment of gold on Monte Cristo. After the governor's inspection, he asserts his ownership of the breviary and bequeaths the fortune to Dantès, viewing the young prisoner as the son God sent to replace his own lost ability to father.
