Swallow, Faile's black Tairen mare, is used to manage the pack animals during the escape. She tumbles off Faile's saddle upon exiting the Waygate but recovers quickly to nuzzle her rider.

Swallow is brought to the sickhouse by Faile, admired by the men, and then left outside with Stepper.

Swallow is brought to the ambush site and survives the battle. She is kept available for the wounded, though Faile insists on walking beside Perrin instead of mounting her.

Swallow is led to the village defenses and ridden by Faile, who keeps the mare close to Perrin during the confrontation with the Trollocs.
