Olver, a nine-year-old orphan, approaches Mat’s tent to see if he is alive after hearing of the attack. Mat finds him nearby with Olver screaming and falling to the ground, and hires him to carry messages, providing him with gold and a horse.

Olver wakes in the stable loft, warns Mat that Aviendha cannot be trusted, and rides his horse Wind with the party, acting as a lookout.
