Chapter 2 - Whirlpools in the Pattern

Rand — aliases: the Dragon Reborn, the Lord Dragon, Dragon Reborn

Rand wakes from a disturbing dream, channels to defend his chambers from Berelain's advances, and then battles three malevolent reflections of himself that emerge from mirrors, absorbing their power to defeat them.

Chapter 3 - Reflection

Rand sits injured in his shattered chambers, bleeding and holding Callandor. He explains the mirror attack to Perrin and Moiraine, refusing to run from his destiny. Moiraine heals his physical wounds, but he remains tense, vowing to find the source of the attack and declaring he will not be chased again.

Chapter 7 - Playing with Fire

Rand receives Egwene and Elayne in his chaotic quarters, demonstrating his raw power by shielding them and creating a mess of floating, burning objects. He explains his use of the 'Flame and Void' to access saidin and rejects the possibility of being taught by women in the traditional sense, before accepting Egwene's rejection of a romantic relationship.

Chapter 8 - Hard Heads

Rand reacts with confusion and awkwardness to Elayne's confession and kiss, later dismissing his lingering thoughts about women to focus on the High Lords. He forces the Tairen lords to accept tax cuts and orders them to hire ships from Mayene, displaying a commanding presence that silences their resistance.

Chapter 9 - Decisions

Rand al'Thor burns a treaty presented by Meilan and Sunamon and threatens to hang them before they flee his chambers. He reflects on the prophecies of his heron markings and his role as the Dragon, only to be confronted by Lanfear, who attempts to persuade him to join the Dark One. Rand kills a Gray Man with Callandor and refuses Lanfear's offer, though he remains aware of her presence and warning.

Chapter 10 - The Stone Stands

Rand enters the Stone's anteroom to find it swarming with Shadowspawn, rallying the Defenders with cries of "The Stone stands" before engaging a Myrddraal in single combat. After killing the Fade and clearing the hall, he hunts down remaining Trollocs until he confronts Lanfear, who warns him about Callandor. Rand retrieves the sword, channels destructive power to burn the enemy forces and creates a lightning storm, but fails to revive a dead child in time, leaving him shaken and exhausted before explaining the invasion to Moiraine and Lan.

Chapter 15 - Into the Doorway

Rand appears at the doorway after Mat, revealing he also used the ter'angreal and received answers interpreted by a woman in the Old Tongue. He stands calmly against Moiraine's anger, explains that he learned of the doorway from books, and discusses the true nature of the beings' answers with Mat before leaving to address the threat to Emond's Field.

Chapter 21 - Into the Heart

Rand strides into the Heart of the Stone accompanied by veiled Aiel, announcing his campaign in Cairhien and forcing Alteima to leave her husband behind. He drives Callandor into the floor to trap it magically, declares his destination as Rhuidean, and explains his actions to Moiraine.

Chapter 25 - The Road to the Spear

Rand walks among the glass columns of the ter'angreal, feeling his consciousness extend backward through time as he experiences the memories of several historical Aiel figures, including Mandein, Rhodric, and Lewin.

Chapter 34 - He Who Comes with the Dawn

Rand / Rand al'Thor — aliases: He Who Comes With the Dawn, Car’a’carn

Rand and Mat stumble up the mountain from Rhuidean, bearing Dragon markings on their arms. He reveals the marks to Couladin to prove his innocence, then demands the Wise Ones send messengers to summon the clan chiefs to Alcair Dal, a demand they grant after he insists on the urgency. He learns the true nature of the prophecy from Bair and details about his parents from Amys and Seana. Upon Moiraine's return, Rand focuses on the time lost and resolves to break the rules to secure his power and act.

Chapter 36 - Misdirections

Rand rides at the front of the Jindo column alongside Rhuarc and Heirn, observing the barren landscape and the Shaido column. He engages in a tense conversation with Aviendha about Elayne, then halts with the group to meet the peddlers. After Rhuarc secures the peddlers' escort, Rand questions the wisdom of the arrangement, whispers darkly to Mat about riding with evil and avoiding snares, and finally accelerates after the wagons depart, convinced that a critical sequence of events has begun.

Chapter 49 - Cold Rocks Hold

Rand / Rand al'Thor — aliases: Car’a’carn

Rides to Cold Rocks Hold, is mounted by Aviendha, and enters the hold with proper ceremony, bowing to Lian. During the meal, he listens to Aviendha's lectures, receives news of the gathering clans, and reacts with tension to Moiraine's inquiries about war before excusing himself.
