Thom teaches Olver skills and drinks wine while Beslan is nearby. He reports that Luca will not leave Ebou Dar until spring and shares humorous anecdotes about Lady Riselle.

Chapter 16 - An Unexpected Encounter

Thom walks alongside Mat, warning of risky business and eventually taking Olver onto his shoulders to leave with Beslan. Mat later encounters a gholam in an alley and uses his foxhead medallion to fight it off. After the gholam slips through a small hole in a wall, a stoop-shouldered, white-haired old man finds Mat. The old man introduces himself as Noal Charin and explains that his pallet in the attic of The Golden Ducks is now occupied by a fat Illianer oil merchant who was rousted from his room in favor of a Seanchan officer, laughing about sleeping rough in a city.

Thom listens to Mat's news about the alliance with Egeanin, agreeing to trust them. He reveals that Nynaeve and Elayne helped acquire a male a’dam in Tanchico to prevent the Black Ajah from using it on Rand.
