Characters
- Egwene — Egwene rides beside Rand, questioning his decision to let Elayne leave and his reliance on the Portal Stone. She expresses anxiety about the danger of the journey and the strength of the angreal Rand uses, but ultimately allows him to proceed with his plan despite her doubts.
- Lan (the Warder) — Lan rides with Moiraine behind Rand, displaying his characteristic stoicism. He contributes to the discussion by noting that the Aiel have sharp eyes and that there are no cities in the Waste, contradicting Rand's source about a floating city. He mounts and follows the group to the location of the Portal Stone.
- Aviendha (Maiden, the Aiel woman) — Aviendha rides with the Maidens of the Spear and later leads the search party that finds the buried Portal Stone. She confronts Rand about his treatment of Elayne, stating she will try to like him for Egwene's sake. She stands stiffly as Rhuarc reveals his knowledge of Rhuidean and watches the activation with an imperturbable demeanor.
- Jeade'en (the dapple stallion) — Jeade'en is Rand's superb dappled stallion, ridden by Rand out of the Stone. The horse matches Rand's mood, dancing a few steps when Rand laughs, and later reining in at his command as he halts to discuss the Portal Stone with Rhuarc.
