Aviendha participates in the Wise Ones' steam ritual and is commanded to stay close to Rand to monitor him. She initially refuses out of hatred for him but reluctantly agrees to watch him for Elayne's sake after facing threats of menial labor from the Wise Ones.

Aviendha rides close to Rand, wearing a semblance of Aiel clothing and no weapons, acting as a monitor for the Wise Ones. She argues with Rand about Elayne and explains the political nuance of the encounter with the peddlers and Couladin.
