Sits in Aludra's wagon negotiating for fireworks secrets, only to be stumped by her riddle about a bellfounder. After leaving the wagon, he visits Valan Luca's circus, observes the performers, and interacts with Thom, Beslan, and Olver, expressing frustration at his captivity in Ebou Dar.
Chapter 16 - An Unexpected Encounter

Mat walks toward Ebou Dar with his companions, observing the overwhelming number of Seanchan settlers arriving with the Corenn. He orders Beslan and Thom to take Olver back to the palace, then wanders the crowded streets until he trips in an alley and is attacked by a gholam. Using his foxhead medallion, he drives the creature off, then meets and introduces himself to a stranger named Noal Charin.
Chapter 17 - Pink Ribbons

Mat hurries through the streets with Noal Charin, navigates the guarded stableyard gate, and observes the Seanchan control over the palace yards. He returns to his quarters to dismiss his loyal Redarm companions for their safety, then storms into Tylin's apartments, where he endures a physical inspection by High Lady Tuon before watching her depart with Tylin and Suroth.
Chapter 19 - Three Women

Mat visits the Wandering Woman, eats with Enid, and retrieves Joline Maza from the cellar after she arrives seeking an escape. He interacts with Egeanin Tamarath and her so'jhin, then sneaks into the palace attic to find Teslyn Baradon, agreeing to help her and Edesina escape before being confronted by Tuon.
Chapter 29 - Another Plan

Mat tries to convince Joline to wear the a’dam, but she fails the test. He then recruits Setalle Anan to help with the escape. He is accosted by Bayle Domon and subsequently meets Egeanin Tamarath, agreeing to a secret alliance to help her escape the Seekers in exchange for three sul’dam.
Chapter 30 - Cold, Fat Raindrops

Mat coordinates the escape logistics, rides Pips in the stableyard while observing Teslyn, and waits in the darkened apartments before meeting Egeanin at the gate to join the escape party.
Chapter 31 - What the Aelfinn Said
Mat / Mat Cauthon — aliases: Toy, pigeon, duckling, pretty fox
Mat detours to free a Windfinder, then encounters and captures Tuon, binding her with strips of her dress and gagging her. He is joined by Noal, Juilin, and Thera, and later Egeanin's group. Upon discovering Tuon's identity, Mat declares her his wife to justify taking her along, soothing a hysterical Selucia and surprising Tuon.
