Valan Luca, a tall, vain traveling showman, stops his menagerie near the road to solicit Elayne as a patroness after trouble with a boar-horse in a previous town. He boasts of his exotic animals and performers, but Elayne and Nynaeve dismiss him with a meager payment and refuse his offer of entertainment.

Chapter 17 - Heading West

Luca recognizes the escaped women, initially threatens them, but accepts their offer to join his troupe after they demonstrate talents. He introduces them to the other performers and assigns them roles within the menagerie.

Chapter 33 - A Question of Crimson

Valan Luca enthusiastically directs the knife-throwing practice, praising Nynaeve’s bravery and attempting to persuade her to wear a crimson silk dress for the performance.

Chapter 34 - A Silver Arrow

Valan Luca joins Elayne at dinner, sitting close and offering flowery compliments and veiled suggestions of a stroll. He attempts to nibble her ear, receives an elbow to the ribs, and is excused by Nynaeve to help with the dishes.

Chapter 36 - A New Name

Valan Luca chivvies his troupe and confronts Elayne and Nynaeve about their delayed departure. He proposes an archery wager against Birgitte to test her skill, losing the bet after she splits three arrows. He agrees to hire her under a new name.

Chapter 37 - Performances in Samara

Valan Luca manages the performance, frowning anxiously during the acts and trying to put his arm around Nynaeve. He bows to the crowd after Juilin's stunt and complains about Elayne adding new moves to her routine.

Chapter 47 - The Price of a Ship

Valan Luca rushes into the menagerie camp, disheveled and limping, ordering his troupe to flee the riots. He pulls Nynaeve aside and desperately proposes marriage, claiming she is the only woman for him, but she rejects him, after which he insists on escorting her back to her wagon.

Chapter 48 - Leavetakings

Valan Luca delivers a handful of wildflowers to Nynaeve, making dramatic vows of undying love and promising to find her again before bowing away in elaborate flourishes.
