Niall listens to Omerna’s report, dismisses the spymaster, and confides in Balwer his strategy to exploit the supposed Black Ajah victory in Salidar and locate Elayne and Gawyn. He reflects on the strategic situation with the Borderlands and Illian before observing a falcon hunt.

Chapter 31 - Red Wax

Niall receives a coded message from Varadin about Faisar in Tanchico and dismisses it after burning the paper. He watches Valda with disdain, then forces Morgase to sign a treaty allowing Whitecloak troops into Andor by having her escape party hanged, before feigning disinterest in her compliance. Morgase offers to play stones with him, which he accepts, but the game does not take place.
