Summoned by Queen Tylin, Mat delivers a sealed warning about Jaichim Carridin and is then unexpectedly paired by the Queen with her son Beslan to attend all upcoming festivals, much to his dismay.

Mat leaves the palace and returns to The Wandering Woman, where he speaks with his men about the threat of Jaichim Carridin and a strange fog. He is attacked in his room by two assassins; he kills one himself and the other collapses into a chest, discovered by his servant Nerim. He finds a warning note about Elayne and Nynaeve in his pocket and observes the innkeepers Jasfer and Setalle Anan inspecting the scene.

On his third night, no note arrives under his door, though he remains confined to his rooms and denied food from the kitchens.

Mat wakes in Tylin’s bed, annoyed by the dice in his head and the loss of his clothes. He escapes to the sitting room to find a mask and twenty gold crowns left by Tylin. He later meets Nalesean and Birgitte for the Festival of Birds, endures an unwanted escort from Beslan, and survives a brutal attack by a guild of beggars. He learns from Beslan that Tylin has chosen him as a lover and flees the situation in a daze.
Chapter 31 - Mashiara

Mat saunters into the Kin's meeting, pushing the maid Derys out of the way. He reveals that he has tracked the Bowl of the Winds to a hidden room with a rusted lock in the Rahad and suggests hiring a boat to fetch it immediately.

Mat waits impatiently in the stableyard, trying to avoid Queen Tylin's attentions before joining Elayne and the Kin. Mat Cauthon secures a forceful bargain with the Sea Folk to secure their compliance, while Nynaeve and Elayne have arranged for the Aes Sedai, Kin, and Queen Tylin to depart for a farm. He then departs to search for the missing boy Olver, only to be caught in the streets as a Seanchan invasion force attacks the city, ultimately being buried under rubble by a channeling blast.
