Chapter 2 - Rhuidean

Chapter 22 - Birdcalls by Night

Rand is awakened by the birdcalls and rushes out to channel balefire against a Draghkar threatening him. He confronts an angry Aviendha after she saves him from another, leading to a heated argument and his reluctant apology. He later discusses the attack's purpose with Asmodean, analyzing the tactics of Sammael and the other Forsaken.

Chapter 23 - “The Fifth, I Give You”

Chapter 31 - The Far Snows

Rand seeks solitude in a ruined merchant's house in Eianrod, only to find Aviendha naked in his bedchamber. He explains to a waking Aviendha that he has held open her gateway for their return and declares that despite the intimate nature of their encounter, Aiel custom prevents them from marrying immediately.

Chapter 32 - A Short Spear

Rand escapes the blizzard with Aviendha, binds a Seanchan patrol with his channeling, and leaps through a masking gateway back to Eianrod. He confronts Asmodean for hiding the gateway's status and demands he teach Rand how to shield against unseen flows of saidin.

Chapter 41 - The Craft of Kin Tovere

Rand studies the disorganized camps from a hilltop and later climbs a wooden tower to observe Cairhien through a brass-bound telescope. He dismisses Weiramon’s advice, notices Couladin among the Shaido, and witnesses a spear thrown from the city walls killing a Shaido warrior, resolving to be as hard as necessary to survive the coming battle.

Chapter 42 - Before the Arrow

Rand al'Thor returns to his tent just as Mat leaves, accepts Mat's departure with a handshake, and orders Natael to play mournful music. Chapter 43 - This Place, This Day

Chapter 45 - After the Storm

Rand wakes up weak but insistent on his independence, rejecting Aviendha's orders to rest and demanding to hear the news of the political situation in Cairhien from Asmodean.

Chapter 52 - Choices

Chapter 55 - The Threads Burn

Rand battles Rahvin in the shifting landscape of Tel'aran'rhiod, resisting Lews Therin's attempt to take over his mind before finally killing the Forsaken with powerful balefire. He returns to the waking palace courtyard, saves Aviendha, Mat, and Asmodean from the Trolloc army, and mourns the losses of his friends while ordering the remaining Shadowspawn to be hunted down.

Chapter 56 - Glowing Embers

Rand stands in a high window watching the garden, then descends to the throne room to meet Bashere. He asserts his authority as the Dragon Reborn, announces an amnesty for men who can channel the True Source, and refuses to let Bashere capture Mazrim Taim, instead claiming him for his own side.
