Chapter 1
Kate Cutrer — aliases: queen of Neptune
Binx's cousin, who suffers from anxiety and PTSD regarding a past car accident; she initially refuses to see people, later reveals her trauma to Binx, and accompanies him to a movie to escape her domestic reality.
Chapter 4
Kate / Miss Ruby
Kate leaves home after a night of anxiety, traveling to Chicago with Binx. She takes her capsules but survives, later claiming she is happy and ready to marry Binx if he tells her what to do. She plays the role of a devoted partner during the trip, visits Harold Graebner with Binx, and returns to New Orleans on a bus, appearing detached but physically well upon arrival.
Chapter 5
Kate / Kate Cutrer
Kate informs Binx that she has told Aunt Emily they are to be married and demands that he wait for her. She then drives him around, confessing her deep fears and her need for him to never laugh at her, asking for pity and constant companionship as she begins her treatment.
Epilogue
Kate / Mrs Stanley Shamoun
Kate marries Binx. She impulsively visits the dying Lonnie, reacts with horror and tears to his condition, and then agrees to run an errand downtown, agreeing to carry a cape jasmine while Binx imagines her doing so.
