Chapter 1 - Lion on the Hill

Summary

Rand al'Thor trains with five skilled swordsmen in the courtyard of the Royal Palace in Caemlyn, testing his abilities through fluid sword forms that offer a mental barrier against the encroaching voice of Lews Therin Telamon. After the practice concludes, Andoran nobles flock to praise him, revealing their internal political rivalries and sycophancy. Davram Bashere questions Rand's safety and the necessity of an Aes Sedai healer, while also probing for information about Mat Cauthon and Egwene. The mood shifts to fear when Rand reveals the identity of Gaebril as the Forsaken Rahvin, prompting Bashere to emphasize the need for political legitimacy through Aes Sedai support. As Rand dresses, Bashere presses him on trusting the Rebel Aes Sedai, and Rand asserts that he will use them but never trust them. The chapter ends with Bashere's officer Tumad Ahzkan reporting that Mazrim Taim has presented himself at the palace gates.
