Chapter 4 - Strings

Mat — aliases: the lad, boy

Mat visits Thom late at night, agitated by a card vision and convinced he is trapped in Tear by Moiraine's watch. He nearly commits to leaving immediately but is easily distracted by Thom into playing a board game, eventually losing his urgency to depart.

Chapter 8 - Hard Heads

Mat admits to Egwene that he is troubled by his lost memories and seeks advice, though he firmly rejects the idea of using the ter'angreal doorway due to his distrust of the One Power.

Chapter 9 - Decisions

Mat

Mat Cauthon discovers that the young lords are avoiding him due to rumors of his cursed luck and that Perrin is hunting for rumors of trouble in Saldaea to lure Faile away. He spends his time in taverns, drinking cheap wine and feeling the heat of the city, while the hours rush by with urgent pressure.

Chapter 15 - Into the Doorway

Mat / Matrim — aliases: the trickster, the gambler

Mat searches the Stone of Tear for the ter'angreal doorway and steps through to a curved hall where he is intercepted by pale, snake-like beings who force him to ask about his fate. He is directed to Rhuidean and given conflicting prophecies about marriage and death before being physically carried back through the doorway. He then encounters Rand and Moiraine, revealing he received answers, while Moiraine departs after stating she has no answers for him. Mat then voices his frustration over the directives and concern for Emond's Field to Rand.

Chapter 23 - Beyond the Stone

Mat / Mat Cauthon

Mat marvels at the survival of the Portal Stone travel and the heat of Chaendaer. He attempts to enter Rhuidean alongside Rand, ignoring Couladin’s spear threat by hiding his weapons. After surrendering his knives to the Wise Ones, he and Rand descend into the fog toward the city, hoping to return alive.

Chapter 34 - He Who Comes with the Dawn

Mat / Matrim — aliases: boy, young man

Mat follows Rand up the mountain, suffering from a blackened throat and head wound sustained in Rhuidean. He drinks water from Bair, accepts treatment from the Wise Ones, and observes the valley and the return of Aviendha and Moiraine alongside Rand.

Chapter 37 - Imre Stand

Mat / Matrim

Mat observes the peddlers and the Aiel trading, noting the value of gold nuggets. He befriends the gleeman Jasin Natael, who extracts detailed stories from him about Rhuidean, during which Mat realizes his memories of past lives have expanded and he can now read Old Tongue. He fights Trollocs in the night attack, relying on his spear and fragmented battle memories, before recovering enough to sleep.
