Egeanin lies on her bed contemplating her future and listens to Bayle's arguments about their escape, later reacting with shock and hesitation to his marriage proposal. She confronts Bethamin with a calm demeanor, asserting her dominance and offering a counter-threat to ensure Bethamin's compliance with spying on the Seeker. After Bethamin leaves, Egeanin feels trapped by the Seeker's investigation and agrees to help Bayle locate Mat Cauthon and Thom Merrilin as potential escape aids.
