Mat Cauthon boit de l'oosquai et fait preuve de sa chance innée en remportant un jeu de lancer de couteaux contre des guerriers Aiel, acceptant un collier de la jeune fille Melindhra. Il retrouve plus tard Rand dans la pénombre, exprime son désir de quitter Rhuidean avec les chariots de Kadere, et reçoit l'autorisation de Rand ainsi qu'un avertissement concernant le marchand.
Chapter 6 - Gateways

Mat defends his door against Darkhounds and is healed by Moiraine. He expresses his frustration with being Rand's friend but remains in Rhuidean.
Chapter 7 - A Departure

Mat sits on his gelding Pips, wearing a wide-brimmed hat and a green coat, and exchanges witty remarks with Egwene regarding Moiraine's forced compliance with Rand's orders.

Chapter 22 - Birdcalls by Night

Mat luxuriates in a massage from Melindhra before the camp's birdcall warnings reveal an attack. He dresses hastily, dons his medallion, and fights Trollocs and a Myrddraal, using his spear to kill the creature while questioning the futility of the assault. After the fight, he interacts with Melindhra and learns from Adelin that the attack was a feint by Sammael.

Chapter 42 - Before the Arrow

Chapter 43 - This Place, This Day

Mat escapes his tent at dawn, rides to a high vantage point, and discovers a Tairen-Cairhienin column walking into an Aiel ambush. He rides down to warn them, assumes command due to Rand's absence, draws Talmanes into a plan, and leads a cavalry charge into the battle.
Chapter 45 - After the Storm

Mat sits injured on a boulder, observing the drunken celebration of Tairens and Cairhienin mingling with the Aiel, and refuses Talmanes and Nalesean's insistence that he lead the triumphal procession as their general.
Chapter 51 - News Comes to Cairhien

Mat arrives at the palace, bringing the news that Morgase is dead and Gaebril is King of Andor. He endures a sharp interrogation from Moiraine about his military exploits before being dismissed by Rand. He is confronted by Melindhra in his quarters, who produces a blade and attacks him as a Darkfriend; he kills her in self-defense and deduces that Sammael may be aware of his movements.
Chapter 52 - Choices

Mat arrives at the docks to report that he killed the Darkfriend Melindhra, suspecting Sammael's involvement. He joins Rand's party to ride south, seemingly resigned to being dragged along by the Pattern despite his earlier plans to leave.
Chapter 53 - Fading Words

Mat squats with his spear, fans Egwene with his hat, and later approaches Rand to urge him to stop mourning and proceed with the mission to Caemlyn.
Chapter 54 - To Caemlyn

Mat accompanies Rand to Caemlyn, grumbling about the gateway. He is struck by lightning, which burns his boots and spear, and he sprawls on the ground stunned but alive.
Chapter 55 - The Threads Burn

Mat survives the Trolloc attack in the plaza, watching the shadows flee after Rand's intervention. He is found by Rand, who hugs him, and Mat fends off the embrace, complaining about the lack of safety in the battle while remaining with Rand and Aviendha.
