Chapter 1

Vic / Victor Nielson

Victor stocks potatoes in the vegetable section, talks with the cashier Liz and later Jack Barnes at a nearby café, and waits for his wife to pick him up, worrying about his son's dental x-rays and the family's finances.

Chapter 2

Vic / Victor

Vic watches television, complains about advertising volume, and interacts with the Black family while hiding his resentment toward Ragle's unconventional work. He eats heavily due to the lasagne, suffers from indigestion, and searches for medication in a dark bathroom where he experiences a mysterious sensory recall of a light cord he had pulled in the past but which does not exist in the current room.

Chapter 4

Vic

Vic lounges in the living room while Ragle confesses to having a nervous breakdown and considering dropping out of the contest. After dinner, he advises Ragle to record the strange occurrences as patterns and listens as Ragle and Margo debate the reality of a Marilyn Monroe article found in a dug-up magazine.

Chapter 5

Vic / Victor Nielson

Vic Nielson supports Ragle's investigation of the phone book and magazines, pressing Bill Black about the existence of Marilyn Monroe. He receives ball-point pens from Black, engages in a discussion about the 'enemy' with his son Sammy, and watches as Black takes the phone book away in anger.

Chapter 6

Vic / Nielson / Victor

Vic performs a psychological experiment on his coworkers by popping a bag and yelling 'Run,' observing that they all bolt in the same direction, and later hallucinates the passengers on his bus ride home as hollow men before reality returns.

Chapter 10

Vic / Victor Nielson / Victor

Vic closes the bedroom shades and explains to Ragle that a heavy taxi driver brought him home from a bar, noting the cost of the fare and the driver's name. Margo later identifies the location as Frank's Bar-B-Q. Vic then comments on the city maintenance trucks outside before leaving for work, suggesting they are fixing a pipe break.

Chapter 11

Vic / Vic Nielson

Vic works in the vegetable section, leaves to meet Ragle in the check-cashing booth, and listens to Ragle's confession about his disappearing act. He observes a tall cashier in a black sweater, suggests Ragle pursue a relationship with her, and agrees to help Ragle investigate the loading dock trucks.

Chapter 12

Vic

Vic forces Margo to leave without him, helps Ragle hijack a truck, and travels with him through a distorted world, paying for food with obsolete currency and escaping an unsettling encounter with young boys.

Chapter 13

Vic

Vic accompanies Ragle to Mrs. McFee's and the drugstore, questioning the situation and eventually confirming with Mrs. Keitelbein that they are safe from the Men's Patrols while Ragle learns the truth.

Chapter 14

Vic / Victor Nielson / Victor

Vic argues passionately against the Lunar colonists, calling them traitors and criticizing their policies. He questions Ragle's choice to abandon Earth and his family, but when Ragle confirms his decision, Vic ignores his farewell and leaves the drugstore, allowing Mrs. Keitelbein to arrange for his return to Old Town.
