Chapter 5 - Among the Wise Ones

Melaine — aliases: Wise One

Melaine argues with Moiraine about the Aiel's independence and expresses her disdain for the Tinkers before revealing her intention to seek Bael as a sister-wife, causing laughter among the Wise Ones. She advises Aviendha to surrender to her fate rather than fight it and later asks her first-sisters to act on her behalf in a matter involving Dorindha.

Melaine confronts Nynaeve about her unauthorized wandering in the dream world, threatens her with Lan's death if she acts recklessly, and alters Nynaeve's form into that of a child before departing with Egwene.

Melaine arrives with the other Wise Ones, examining the burnt Draghkar. She quickly determines they are needed elsewhere and hurries off without waiting for permission, leaving the others to handle Rand's situation.

Chapter 23 - “The Fifth, I Give You”

Melaine starts to join Aviendha and Egwene but is halted by Sorilea's glare, then flushes and returns to the Wise Ones as they walk behind Rand.

Chapter 41 - The Craft of Kin Tovere

Melaine stands with the clan chief Bael, adjusting his coat while the Wise Ones attempt to influence the chiefs.

Chapter 53 - Fading Words

Melaine joins the group examining Egwene, her sun-haired beauty openly angry, and states that Egwene cannot go with Rand in her current state.
