Verge ferries Bremen to the shack and takes him fishing in the swamp on the second day, his wordless thoughts providing a soothing counterpoint to Bremen's turmoil. He is described as having been a poet in his youth before a stroke left him with aphasia and a gentle, rhythmic mind.
