Sammy expresses a preference for eating a frozen hamburger uncooked while waiting for his father, complains about the family's Volkswagen, and expresses admiration for a passing red Tucker sedan.

Chapter 2

Sammy

Sammy interrupts the poker game to show Vic his homemade crystal radio set, asking for help wiring the antenna. He discusses potential radio signals with the adults, considers picking up flying saucers, and declares the radio will be the official equipment of his backyard clubhouse.

Chapter 4

Sammy / Sammy Nielson

Sammy spends the evening at the Ruins digging up a phone book and magazines, then trades the find to Ragle for fifty cents. He watches 'Gunsmoke' and ignores Margo's warnings about playing in the lots.

Chapter 5

Sammy — aliases: McBoy

Sammy reports that his crystal radio set is finished but picking up nothing. He loudly declares that 'the enemy' is using atomic dupe-guns to dupe the family, a claim that amuses the adults and is followed by him playing with his dessert dish before retiring to his room.

Chapter 6

Sammy / Sammy Nielson

Sammy repairs his crystal radio by attaching a long wire antenna to the roof, tunes into various strange broadcasts including a conversation about anise breadsticks and Morse code, and eagerly tries to find Uncle Ragle to share his discovery.
