Chapter 5 - A Different Dance

Finally, he leads the Band of the Red Hand out of Maerone, executing a rapid march to deceive Sammael.

Chapter 22 - Heading South

Mat juggles colored stones while riding with his commanders, learns of a massacred Tinker caravan from scout Chel Vanin, and orders the site buried to suppress rumors. He commands the construction of a ditch and palisade around the camp after realizing the attackers were guided by a gateway. Mat fights off the infiltrating Aiel, survives with multiple wounds, and hires the boy Olver to carry messages for him in exchange for a horse and pay.

Chapter 33 - Courage to Strengthen

Mat plays a board game with Olver when Rand al'Thor arrives to give him a mission. Mat accepts the order to retrieve Elayne from Salidar with the full Band and Aviendha, briefs his commanders on the plan, and prepares for immediate departure.

Chapter 38 - A Sudden Chill

Mat / Mat Cauthon / Matrim Cauthon — aliases: General Cauthon, Lord General Cauthon

Mat leads the Band of the Red Hand through intense heat, relying on Vanin's scouting to assess the Aes Sedai threat in Salidar. He confronts Anaiya and questions Aviendha, then rides into the village where he is led by Nynaeve to the Little Tower. Inside, he discovers Egwene as Amyrlin, forcibly removes her from the chair to protect her from the Aes Sedai, and orders Egwene to prepare a gateway to Caemlyn, threatening the women with his temper and warnings.

Chapter 39 - Possibilities

Mat — aliases: Lord Cauthon

Mat storms into the Little Tower, orders Egwene to make a gateway to Caemlyn, and is kicked by Nynaeve when he threatens her. He argues that serving Rand makes him a Dragonsworn and warns of the political danger, then leaves in a huff after Elayne mocks his departure.

Chapter 40 - Unexpected Laughter

Mat sits with Thom Merrilin, listening to a story about a rescued woman and taking advice to let Elayne and Nynaeve go to Ebou Dar. He kicks a keg in frustration, sends Vanin to relay orders to Talmanes, and attempts to approach Nynaeve, only to be ignored by her. He reflects on his role and the danger of the Aes Sedai factions, then Elayne leads Aviendha back to her room.

Chapter 44 - The Color of Trust

Mat secures a stable in Salidar and displays his banners to assert his presence, only to be ignored by the Amyrlin’s office. He dances to feign indifference, narrowly avoiding an influence attempt by Halima, and is later surprised by the appearance of the healed Siuan and Leane. Upon being commanded by Egwene to escort Elayne and Nynaeve to Ebou Dar, he organizes his commanders and scouts to follow the party covertly while he leads them through a gateway.

Chapter 47 - The Wandering Woman

Mat endures Elayne's inspections and the women's magical probing, eventually reaching Ebou Dar where he ignores Elayne's warnings about drinking and settles his men at the inn The Wandering Woman, finding relief from his headache and the ominous feeling of dice rolling in his head.

Chapter 52 - Weaves of the Power

Mat gambles at a dice table in The Wandering Woman, losing a streak of tosses before leaving to search for the missing women. He interacts with his servants Olver, Nerim, and Nalesean, and observes the local populace and atmosphere of Ebou Dar with a mix of annoyance and resignation.
