Master Penelon stands on the deck of the Pharaon and waves to M. Morrel from a distance, while the crowd on the jetty identifies the ship by the name inscribed on its prow and observes its safe entry into port.

Penelon — aliases: the old sailor, the gardener

Penelon is digging a bed of roses in the garden. He is called by Julie to inform Emmanuel of the visitor's arrival. He still refers to Julie as 'Mademoiselle Julie' and is identified as the former bosun who recognizes the Count's emissary from a past encounter in Trieste.

Maître Penelon is in the garden taking cuttings from Bengal roses. He runs upstairs with Julie and Emmanuel in response to Morrel's cries.
