Chapter 2 - Father and Son

Caderousse — aliases: neighbour, the tailor

Caderousse arrives at the Dantès household claiming to have met Danglars and come to welcome Dantès back. He feigns indifference to Dantès's money, offers sycophantic advice, and reveals to Danglars later that he observed a 'cousin' accompanying Mercédès, prompting their conspiracy to watch Dantès.

Chapter 3 - Les Catalans

Caderousse drinks wine with Danglars, calls Fernand over, and loudly mocks Fernand's romantic failure. He shouts insults at Edmond and Mercédès from a distance and feigns drunkenness while eagerly anticipating the engagement dinner.

Chapter 4 - The Plot

Caderousse sits with the conspirators, initially mumbling a drinking song and expressing confusion, then voicing moral objections to harming Dantès. He is repeatedly forced to drink by the others until he becomes too drunk to remain coherent or aware of the plot, eventually stumbling away with Danglars while Fernand remains behind.

Caderousse, now an impoverished innkeeper, agrees to recount the truth about his friends under the abbé’s promise of secrecy. He details the starvation death of Old Dantès, the ruin of Monsieur Morrel, and the rise of Danglars and Fernand to wealth and nobility. After swearing on a crucifix and the New Testament, he accepts a diamond worth fifty thousand francs from the abbé, then leaves to verify its authenticity at the fair.

Chapter 83 - The Hand of God

Caderousse — aliases: the unfortunate man

Caderousse, bleeding from three wounds, is carried inside by Monte Cristo and Ali. He signs a statement denouncing Andrea Cavalcanti as his murderer, argues with the Abbé about God and justice, and finally recognizes Dantès, repents, and dies.
