Chapter 13 - In Pendleton Woods

Summary

Disappointed by the Ladies' Aid's refusal to take in Jimmy Bean, Pollyanna walks through Pendleton Woods to soothe her spirits and is approached by a frantic dog leading her to an injured John Pendleton lying at the base of a rock ledge. Although Pendleton is initially irritable and demanding, Pollyanna follows his instructions to enter his imposing, dusty mansion, locate the telephone, and call Dr. Chilton for help. She returns to Pendleton's side to hold his head comfortably while she waits for the doctor, offering him her characteristic optimism about his inner nature, before the medical party arrives to assist the injured recluse.

Characters

• Pollyanna (little lady) — Pollyanna follows a frantic dog into the woods, discovers John Pendleton injured with a broken leg, and confidently enters his mysterious house to call Dr. Chilton for help. She returns to hold his head in her lap, offering comfort and asserting that he is kind inside despite his grumpy exterior, waiting patiently for the doctor's arrival.
• John Pendleton / Mr. Pendleton (the Man) — Pendleton lies injured at the foot of a rock ledge, initially snapping at Pollyanna before directing her to his house to summon Dr. Chilton. He accepts her help in positioning his head, watching her with a grim smile as she demonstrates her unwavering cheerfulness despite his harsh demeanor.
• Dr. Chilton (Dr.) — Dr. Chilton arrives with two men and a stretcher, greeted cheerily by Pollyanna. He ignores her chatter and focuses his absorbed attention on treating the injured John Pendleton.
